Tennis Betting Verdict: Mikhail Youzhny is notoriously streaky yet he has managed to maintain some kind of steady form this season for significant stretches, enough so to improve his ranking to No.14 and pick up a title.
Youzhny has played to a 30-14 mark this term, which includes winning at Munich and finishing runner-up in back-to-back events – Rotterdam and Dubai.
Youzhny is a solid favourite at -450 to win his opening round encounter at the US Open. Recommending his odds is a modest 2-0 lifetime edge over Golubev. Crucially, both wins were recent – Rotterdam (2010) and St. Petersburg (2009).
Their encounter in Rotterdam was the closer of the two, coming down to the wire 1-6, 7-6, 7-5(5). This suggests that their next battle could be similarly contested.
Typically, in a best-of-five scenario the more experienced player and the better-ranked player, has the edge but Golubev is a player on the upswing and given Youzhny’s tendency to unravel on occasion, he’s not without a shot. At +275 to win outright, he’s priced on the larger side making a win by him an upset.

Tobias Kamke +7 -135 +400 32½ O -135 U -105
Philipp Kohlschreiber -7 -105 -700 32½ O -135 U -105

Tennis Betting Verdict: It will be the first encounter between Germans Tobias Kamke and Philipp Kohlschreiber when they collide in the first round of the US Open. Kohlschreiber naturally gets the favourite not at -700 to win outright. The 26-year-old German is a solid top 30 player. He could be ranked higher if he were more consistent. Nevertheless, Kohlschreiber is enjoying a good term playing to a 29-18 mark, which includes a semi-final finish at Auckland and several quarterfinal appearances – san Jose, Monte Carlo, Munich, Halle and Toronto. During the US Open Series, he competed in Toronto and Cincinnati, playing to a 5-2 mark. He was forced to withdraw from
Cincy when he injured his shoulder on a bizarre fall, toppling off a stool apparently.
His opposite, Kamke, has very little experience at this level, having played to a 3-3 mark thus far. He’s had some success at the Challenger level but there is a wide gulf between that level and the pro Tour. Beating Kohlschreiber would be his single most impressive feat to date. Easier said than done.
Tennis Free Picks: Kohlschreiber in four sets
