BCS Championship Game – Players with Draft Stock
January 7, 2010
The BCS Championship is Littered With NFL Talent
It’s no secret that this year’s BCS Championship game is boasting the two best teams in college football for the 2009 college football betting season. But as this college betting expert predicts, it will also showcase some of the best talent in the game. Here’s a rundown of the major players and their 2010 NFL Draft stock. Do any of these players deserve to be on your favorite NFL team?
Colt McCoy – QB (Texas)
Let’s start with the biggest name in the game, which belongs to Colt McCoy. The Texas quarterback holds the record for most wins as a college pigskin hurler and has been known to wrack up huge numbers when he needs to. Of course, supplanting Vince Young is no easy task yet McCoy did it in style piling up stats and wins.
Yet McCoy is hampered by two major flaws in his ability to takeover games, and neither of them include his desperate need to rely on a stiff Texas defense to win games. McCoy almost never calls audibles from the line, either because he doesn’t know what he’s looking at or he’s simply too scared of Mack Brown to do so.
The guy in the NFL who is most notorious for this is Peyton Manning, and while we grew sick of it for years we as fans have grown to appreciate such a skill.
McCoy, at best is a second-round quarterback and he’ll earn that privilege on pedigree alone. No draft board I’ve read (and I’m a serious junkie when it comes to drafts) has had the gall to put McCoy in the first-round. Depending on how he plays in this game (which won’t be easy considering the strength of Alabama’s defense) I see McCoy going late to a quarterback desperate team.
Furious Prediction: Washington Redskins (2nd Round)

Rolando McClain – ILB (Alabama)
The stalwart of the Alabama defense is a massive 6-foot-3, 245 pound speed freak who barely ever misses a tackle and is relentless in pursuit. His leadership abilities were proven in the Florida game and if he leads Project McCoy Shutdown effectively this week then he’ll be the most sought after linebacker in the draft.
Furious Prediction: Denver Broncos via Chicago (1st Round)
Earl Thomas – Safety (Texas)
Thomas is one of three complete safeties in the draft, but his stock has fallen due to the crushing hits by USC’s Taylor Mays and the presence of Eric Berry from Tennessee who is the top rated player in the upcoming draft. He’s small at 5-foot-11 and 198 pounds but he can certainly pack a wallop. Whether he can do that at the NFL level remains to be seen, but I see safeties being ripped off the board like crazy. He’ll go to one of three teams that desperately need safety help, and with some luck, it’ll be San Francisco.
Furious Prediction: San Francisco 49ers (1st Round)
Jordan Shipley – WR (Texas)
The main (and only) receiving threat for Texas caught 106 passes for 11 touchdowns this season. Yet at barely six feet tall and just 190 pounds, scouts question how effective he will be in the pros. A big game against Alabama’s Javier Arenas might boost his stock up enough to be taken in the second round, but all NFL scouts would say that’s a reach.
Furious Prediction: Tennessee Titans (3rd Round)
Terrence Cody – DT (Alabama)
Cody is a monster at 6-foot-3 and 373 pounds. The problem for him in the draft is that he’ll be figuratively overshadowed by Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy who are rated in the top-5. He could prove his worth and break out of the heated race for “third best defensive tackle” in the 2010 draft, especially if he’s seen on prime time making Colt McCoy’s life a living hell. It’s hard to pass on a guy that big, but he has so major work to do in terms of NFL level conditioning.
Furious Prediction: Fourth Round
Sergio Kindle – OLB/DE (Texas)
This combo player is tall and fast, but he’s not necessarily the strongest guy on the field at times. He has major problems stuffing the run and will have a mouthful when he tries to help stop Mark Ingram in the BCS Championship game. This could very well make or break his first-round draft stock, but for teams that deploy the 3-4, he may be gold in the first round.
Furious Prediction: Pittsburgh Steelers (1st Round)
