Brock Lesnar Returns – Let the Comeback Begin

January 20, 2010

Whether they love him or hate him, it’s usually one or the other, everyone agrees that no one in the UFC stirs up the emotions or sells tickets quite the same way Brock Lesnar does.

After being incapacitated since October 2009 with diverticulitis that was originally diagnosed as mono, Lesnar has announced that he is officially back according to UFC.com.

Doctors had originally recommended that Lesnar get his colon removed, which could have been a huge setback for the current UFC Heavyweight Champion, but Lesnar went down his own path and let his body heal naturally along with rest and nutrition, and that turned out to be the right choice as his recent tests have come back clean.

Lesnar will now turn to the future, and several challenges await the massive 280-pound former WWE star and NFL hopeful.

Shane Carwin, the man who was supposed to face Lesnar on January 2nd, will square off with the only man to ever beat Lesnar, Frank Mir, at UFC 111 in March.

The winner of that seems likely to get Mr. Lesnar sometime in the summer in what could end up being one of the biggest fights in UFC history.

The MMA betting community knows that the inexperienced Lesnar can fall victim to anyone with good jiu-jitsu, but they also know that Lesnar has the natural strength and ability to mercilessly destroy an opponents face the way he did to Mir in their title fight rematch at UFC 100.

Despite his absence, that raw talent and the continued improvements he showed should make Lesnar the betting favorite over either Carwin or Mir. That’s all speculation as a lot depends on the outcome of Mir and Carwin’s interim title fight in regards to the odds on Lesnar’s comeback fight.

If Mir smashes Carwin, the win combined with his knockout of Cheick Kongo and the recent addition of 20-25 pounds of muscle due to a powerlifting regimen, could make him a close underdog to Lesnar or perhaps even put him at even odds.

If Carwin can defeat Mir in impressive fashion, he just might have a chance to creep up in the odds department leading up to his fight with Lesnar. Carwin would be the first guy Lesnar’s fought who can compare with him in terms of brute size and strength.

Whatever the outcome of the Mir-Carwin fight, know that Lesnar’s return will mean big bucks for the UFC a chance to do the same for the betting community on Lesnar’s first fight back from illness this summer.
