Champions League Tuesday Results: Liverpool stunned by Fiorentina and more…
September 30, 2009
UEFA Champions League Tuesday batch of second group matches came to a dramatic close as Internazzionale Milan were frustrated by Ruben Kazan to a 1:1 draw and with AC Fiorentina – making the biggest splash of the night – thwarting Liverpool FC 2:0.
If Ruben Kazan and AC Fiorentina came into their respective matchups as massive underdogs someone had omitted to tell them and there followed perhaps the most scintillating 90 minutes of football. They certainly didn’t play like the mere puppies they were held to be in the market and took it to their star-studded opponents with interest.
The biggest story of the night has to be Liverpool suffering their first loss in UEFA Champions League group action in like forever. To be exact, it was their first loss since October 2007 when they suffered a 2-1 defeat by Besiktas in group action.
Disappointing as this result was for Liverpool and their fans they can take heed of the clubs imperious history and resilience both in the competition and domestic front. One bad result doesn’t the end spell.
To look at the standings in Group E, I won’t lie, it looks grim for Rafa Benitez and his men. They are third in the table, level on points with Fiorentina at 3, and 3 points shy of top of the table Olympique Lyonnais.
Nothing to it. Benitez and his men will have to look ahead to match day 3 when they will welcome Lyon to Anfield Stadium. A good home UEFA Champions League victory is just what the doctor ordered and so at Anfield Stadium, Liverpool have to recover lost ground.
Ruben Kazan made a real effort before their fans, they missed out on two points, failing to take some key chances late in the match when they had the man advantage. The one point they gained is still a satisfactory result against Inter Milan when most expected them to walk away empty-handed. Group F is tightly packed right now with all four clubs separated by a point after two cycles. Barcelona, after beating Dynamo Kyiv 2:0 on Tuesday are back on top of Group F with four points from two cycles. Dynamo Kyiv are second (1-0-1) and Inter Milan are third (0-2-0). Group F is finally taking on the shape many expected it would from the start.
In other matches today, Sevilla FC continued their imperious form beating Rangers FC 4:1 on the away while, Stuttgart and Unirea Urziceni drew 1:1. Sevilla lead Group G with six points. Stuttgart are second with two points and the Romanian debutants and Rangers are level on points at one apiece.
Arsenal FC enjoyed a 2:0 victory over Olympiacos at Arsenal Stadium today and the victory put them at the top of Group H with six points while Olympiacos slipped to second spot with three points. Meanwhile, Standard de Liege and AZ Alkmaar drew 1:1 in the other Group H match on Tuesday. By sharing in the spoils, they each finally got on the board with a point apiece.
