Cincinnati is One of the Biggest NFL Football Picks Faves

September 2, 2010

The Cincinnati Bengals are one of the biggest football line picks favorites to win their Thursday game. Thursday’s game is the final game of the NFL Preseason and most teams, including the Bengals’ adversaries on Sept. 2nd, will be resting most of their starters.

Cincinnati might be resting their players as well but since their opponent, the Indianapolis Colts, haven’t shown the desire to even try to win an NFL Preseason game this season, the betting line appears justified.

NFL Betting Lines

Cincinnati Bengals -6 -110 O 37 ½ -110

Indianapolis Colts +6 -110 U 37 ½ -110

Most free football picks against the spread experts no doubt are going to look at the fact that Cincinnati has won 2 out of their 3 NFL Preseason games and that the Indianapolis Colts haven’t won a single NFL Preseason game and determine that the Bengals are the team to back in the sportsbook.

That’s not the way that the line has been going, however. The line started out as Bengals -6 ½. Now, it’s Cincy -6. The reason that the line has gone down is because the Bengals, like the Colts, are most likely going to rest their starters.

With both teams’ starters on the bench, how do sports handicappers use the Cincy vs. Indy game as one of their football game picks this week?

Maybe, they won’t. The truth is that picking a team ATS in this game at first appears to make absolutely no sense. So what if the Colts haven’t won a game yet this preseason? They’re still the Colts and they are playing at home.

Plus, both teams will be resting their starters, but a closer look reveals that the Bengals should win this game easily, by much more than the football picks spread of 6 points, that’s for sure.

The Colts don’t often “try” very hard during the NFL Preseason to win games. When it comes to the 4th game, the game right before the regular season starts, the Colts pretty much pack it in and take a few hours off. They don’t even seem to practice hard during the 4th NFL Preseason game.

Indianapolis and Cincinnati have faced each other in the final preseason game since seemingly forever. The Bengals usually win and in recent years they’ve won big. Since 2005, the Bengals have beaten the Colts in the final NFL Preseason by scores of 38 to 0 in 2005, 20 to 3 in 2006, 14 to 6 in 2007, 27 to 7 in 2008 and 38 to 7 last season.

What will change this season? Absolutely nothing. The Bengals should wax the Colts again. Cincinnati just plays harder in the 4th game of the NFL Preseason. The Colts are a veteran, tough group, that’s not going to do too much right before the regular season starts.

They’ve proved it in the last five NFL Preseason games against the Bengals. Why change now?
