College Football Week 2 – MAC Power Poll and Analysis

September 9, 2009

Even though the MAC only recorded three victories last week, several teams found ways to beat the football betting odds. Find out where they all rank in this week’s BetOnline Sportsbook power poll…

1: Buffalo Bulls (1-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) The Bulls went on the road and upset a game UTEP squad to kick off its MAC title defense in style. The offense wasn’t overly efficient, as it only racked up 309 total yards, but much like last season, HC Turner Gill’s squad found a way to record a victory. The outright upset was made more impressive by the fact that the oddsmakers had Buffalo lined as a 10.5-point underdog. This week may be the most important game in Bulls’ history.

Up Next: Home vs. Pittsburgh

2: Bowling Green Falcons (1-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) Troy came into Bowling Green last week hoping to assert itself as one of the better mid-major teams in America, but the Falcons had other ideas. Thanks to QB Tyler Sheehan’s 339 yards and two TDs, BGSU got its season off on the right foot with a 31-14 victory. Can it claim an even bigger scalp this week?

Up Next: Away @ Missouri

3: Northern Illinois Huskies (1-0 ATS, 0-1 SU) Even though they trailed 28-6 through three quarters, the Huskies hit the backdoor and then scared the pants off of the Badgers on the opening Saturday of the college football betting season. NIU may have only racked up 274 yards of offense, but it was more than enough to stick in front of the 16.5-point spread.

Up Next: Home vs. Western Illinois

4: Central Michigan Chippewas (1-0 ATS, 0-1 SU) QB Dan LeFevour was hoping to get off to a better start than this to his senior season against the Wildcats. He only completed 18 of 31 passes for 108 yards without throwing a touchdown pass in CMU’s 19-6 loss to Arizona. Still, thanks to the defenses “bend but don’t break” philosophy, the Chippies still covered the hefty spread.

Up Next: Away @ Michigan State

5: Akron Zips (1-0 ATS, 0-1 SU) Akron may rank 108 th in the nation in defense and 112 th in offense through one week of football, but it was just barely strong enough to stick in front of the 29.5-point spread in Happy Valley over the weekend. Penn State was clearly the superior team, but the Zips avoided a bettor’s disaster after falling behind 31-0 at halftime by outscoring the disinterested Nittany Lions 7-0 in the second half.

Up Next: Home vs. Morgan State

6: Kent State Golden Flashes (0-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) Kent State had an impressive defensive showing against Coastal Carolina, but the truth of the matter is that an 18-0 victory probably isn’t good enough. RB Eugene Jarvis had a solid game, touching the ball 30 times for 171 yards and a rushing touchdown, but no one else on the offense was noteworthy.

Up Next: Away @ Boston College

And the rest…

7: Toledo Rockets (0-1 ATS, 0-1 SU)

8: Western Michigan Broncos (0-1 ATS, 0-1 SU)

9: Eastern Michigan Eagles (0-1 ATS, 0-1 SU)

10: Ohio Bobcats (0-1 ATS, 0-1 SU)

11: Miami Redhawks (0-1 ATS, 0-1 SU)

12: Temple Owls (0-0 ATS, 0-1 SU)
