Couture is a Lock over Toney – UFC 118 Betting

August 28, 2010

UFC 118 from Boston this Saturday night may be headlined by the Penn/Edgar rematch, but the fight that is stealing all the headlines is a bout between Randy “the Natural” Couture and James “Lights Out” Toney. If you’ve been watching the interviews, you’d think that it was Toney who went by the name “The Natural” as he just soaks up the camera. It which makes the pre-fight banter all the more entertaining, thus all the media coverage, but the real reason this is such a big fight is it is a battle of supremacy between Boxing and MMA.

UFC 118: Edgar vs. Penn 2:

TD Arena – Boston, MA

Saturday, August 28th at 10pm ET

Live on PPV

We have had the privilege of watching the back and forth for months now as both sides wage the war over which sport is “better”, for lack of a more descriptive word. I don’t think there is any doubt that Toney would destroy Couture if this was a pure boxing match, but it’s not, and in my opinion, this is more of a publicity stunt than anything. Toney has come out and stated that boxing is still number one and he can go a long way in proving that by taking out one of the sports legends, but I just don’t think he has a shot.

Still, with all the attention this fight is getting, it is good for both sports. And with so much interest, the pay-per-view numbers look like they are going to be massive, so the UFC wins either way.

UFC 118 Betting Line:

James Toney (+450) vs. Randy Couture (-700)

The problem for Toney is that mixed martial arts is such an evolved sport with and every fighter being so well versed in all areas of combat. Toney just lacks the skill set to compete with a guy that has been practicing MMA for practically his whole life.

There is no questioning that he has the power to knock Coutoure’s head off, but the real question is if he’ll even get the chance. If, and more likely, when he gets taken down, Toney is all but finished. Randy is an extremely strong wrestler who will have no problem keeping Toney pinned to the canvas while he reigns down from the top. And no offense to Toney, but he’s not the most nimble of guys and will have no hope of wiggling out and getting back on his feet.

That gives “Lights Out” a few seconds at the start of the first round and possibly the second, if he makes it that far, to knock Couture out. This is MMA and any fighter has a punchers chance, but if you have half a brain, you know that Couture is going to be shooting on Toney the second the bell rings and will dominate this fight from start to finish.

At +450, betting on Toney is tempting, but stupid in my opinion. Long shots like that usually never pay out and although risking $700 is a lot, Couture is a LOCK on Saturday night.
