Detroit Lions NFL Draft Article – The Lottery Pick
April 24, 2009
The Detroit Lions haven’t made a whole lot of good decisions lately, but the trade they made in shipping Roy E. Williams (the receiver) to Dallas for a first and third round pick essentially was one of the steals of the year.
It’s not that Williams is a terrible receiver or anything, but his attitude had soured a bit due to the constant losing, which is actually understandable. He wanted to be a Lion but it wasn’t meant to be. Now, the Lions have the 1st pick and 20th pick in the draft along with the 33rd pick, the first in the second round.
Here’s who the Lions might pick with these picks and who they should pick.
Detroit Lions’ 1st Overall Draft Pick
The Lions have reportedly narrowed the choices down to Matt Stafford the QB from Georgia, Aaron Curry the OLB from Wake Forest, Jason Smith the LT from Baylor, and Eugene Monroe from Virginia.
Stafford is the likeliest choice but rumors have Curry as a solid shot as well. Ideally the Lions will pass on the QB here and build a foundation for a change by taking the athletic blindside protector Smith or the hard-hitting presence Curry, who can play all three linebacker spots. The prediction here is that the Lions pull a surprise and go with Curry after they realize Stafford’s mechanical flaws and big-game struggles on film.
Detroit Lions 20th Overall Draft Pick
At this spot the Lions will look to take either an offensive lineman or a defensive player most likely. Assuming they draft Curry as I predicted, they will hope Michael Oher, the offensive tackle from Ole Miss, falls this far. If not as projected recently, they might go defensive tackle with Peria Jerry or Ziggy Hood of Missouri. But a sleeper pick here could be Illinois cornerback Vontae Davis.
Detroit Lions 33rd Overall Draft Pick
The Lions might need another young offensive tackle here so Jamon Meredith of South Carolina is a possibility at this spot. He can play multiple spots on a bad o-line. A running back or receiver is not out of the question either since Tennessee liked to use multiple backs when Jim Schwartz was there.
LeSean McCoy of Pitt could be a surprise pick here as Maurice Morris is only an average second option for the Lions, who has signed in the off-season.
