English Premier League Recap – The Deep Freeze Britain
January 12, 2010
A deep freeze claimed Britain this weekend, as it did much of Europe, and unfortunately for Premier League fans the consequence was cancellation almost across the board as there was no way many of the scheduled fixtures could have gotten underway under the severe conditions.
Only three matches saw to completion: Arsenal vs. Everton, Birmingham vs. Manchester United and Manchester City vs. Blackburn. Here is a recap of the above-mentioned trio of matches.
Arsenal 2-2 Everton
The Gunners missed out on three crucial points this weekend when they settled on a 2:2 draw against Everton at the Emirates Stadium. They almost missed on any points when in the 80th minute Piennar gave Everton the 2:1 lead. If Rosicky had not claimed a dramatic end to the proceedings with his 90th minute equalizer, Arsene Wenger and Co. would have walked off their home pitch empty-handed.
The draw saw them gain a point to hold their place, third in the league and three points shy of Chelsea FC. Chelsea FC had their match cancelled so they remained at 45 points at the end of the week – lucky for them, the Blues that is, with Arsenal failing to close the gap and Man U failing to overhaul them after their match also settled on a draw, Chelsea remain on top dogs.
Birmingham City 1-1 Manchester United
Manchester United had a prime opportunity to overhaul Chelsea FC in the table this weekend, especially with the limited schedule of play on hand. Sir Fergusson and Co. travelled to high-flying Birmingham City on Saturday, aiming to take all three points but in the end they needed an own-goal from Birmingham City defender Scott Dann to save the day. The unmerited draw has to be considered the Red Devils worst performance. For Birmingham City it proves that sometimes even when you do almost everything right the result can come out wrong. They were unlucky to be denied the coup beating Man U would have been.
All things said and done, Man U gladly take the point. They are a point shy of Chelsea FC in the table in second place but fans have to be mindful of the fact that Man U are now at 21 cycles while Chelsea are at 20 – a game in hand.
Manchester City 4-1 Blackburn Rovers
Carlos Tevez was the man of the hour as he scored his first hat trick for Manchester City in their 4-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers. Tevez opened the scoring in the 6th minute and closed the books with his third of the night at the 90th minute. Tevez’s singularly hot performance gave Manchester City the much-need three points to overhaul Tottenham from fourth spot in the table. The win had to help deal with the shocking news of the ambush on the Togo national football team, on its way to the African Nations Cup, and realization of what a narrow escape for their teammate and Togo captain, Emanuel Adebayor, it was.
