Football Odds – Surprising 2-1 Teams Close Out Their Preseason
September 2, 2010
The Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions have somewhat defied the football odds by going 2-1 Straight Up and ATS in the preseason so far. Both teams still have question marks going into Week 4 of the preseason and both feature young, exciting running backs.
BUFFALO BILLS (2-1) vs. DETROIT LIONS (2-1)
Thursday, September 2, 7:00 PM
Ford Field
Detroit, Michigan
Football Odds:
Buffalo: +5 (-110)
Detroit: -5 (-110)
Moneyline: Buffalo +180: Detroit -220
Total: 38 ½ points: Over (110), Under (110)
The Buffalo Bills have exceeded expectations so far in the preseason. Coach Chan Gailey appears to have this team going in the right direction. A win on Thursday night would give the Bills a winning preseason record – too bad it’s only the preseason!

Going into Thursday’s game, the question of who is the Bills’ starting quarterback is still up in the air. Trent Edwards appears to be the Football Odds front runner based on his 24 of 37 passing for 304 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason. He will get a good look against the Lions as will Ryan Fitzpatrick who has also shown signs of life so far. Brian Brohm will likely play the second half but appears to be the odd man out in Buffalo. There is still some competition for the receiving spots in Buffalo. They will likely carry 5 receivers but logically only one (Lee Evans) has been determined.
The running back situation is a little cloudy as well. CJ Spiller has been tremendous so far in the preseason and his efforts may have vaulted him into the starting role ahead of injured Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch. Lynch may see some playing time in the preseason finale but Jackson is still nursing an injury.
The Buffalo defense was solid last season and has picked up where it left off. There is still some work to do, but expect the first teamers to play nearly the whole first half against the Lions.
The Detroit Lions have also been good in the preseason. A 2-1 record had brought with it some unrecognizable optimism in the Motor City. Hopes are that they can continue to defy the Football odds and carry on their strong preseason.
Matthew Stafford has shown the poise of a veteran so far and has garnered the trust of his teammates. He may not see much action in Thursday’s game, but it will be enough to raise a few more eyebrows. Calvin Johnson and Brandon Pettigrew will play, but don’t expect much from them.
By far the biggest surprise in the Lions camp has been the play of Jahvid Best whose running style has wowed his team and the NFL “experts”. With Kevin Smith’s injury history, Best may have already cemented himself as the starter. He will get another look Thursday and Football odds are that he will impress once again.
Ndamukong Suh and Kyle Vanden Bosch have given the Detroit defense a presence that has been sadly lacking in Detroit. The defense will be better this season guaranteed. Just don’t expect to see much of this revamped first unit in Thursday’s game.
Football Odds Outlook:
The Football Odds currently have the Lions -5 but I think that it is a little rich. There are some curious camp battles in Buffalo and with roster spots yet to be determined, the Bills have much more to play for. Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick will both be hugely motivated for this game but I think that CJ Spiller will be the difference in this game again. Take the Underdog in this one.
Football Odds Pick: Buffalo Bills to cover the 5 points
