Golf Odds – Who is the Best Bet From Great Britain or Ireland to Win the British Open?
July 14, 2010
Lee Westwood’s calf is injured yet he, along with Rory McIlroy, are the golf wagering favorites in the sportsbook to win this week’s British Open.
Based on the online betting odds being offered, neither guy appears to be a good bet to me to beat their fellow British and Irish peers at St. Andrews this week.
I’m going to put some money on a couple of guys going off at slightly better odds than McIlroy and Westwood.

Top GB and Ireland
Best Golf Bet A: Graeme McDowell +800
He finished 11th at the 2005 British Open at St. Andrews and is coming off of a 21st place finish at the Scottish Open.
Before the Scottish Open, he won the U.S. Open and The Celtic Manor Wales Open. McDowell is hot.
I see him at least winning this category and I believe he’s got a shot for the actual British Open victory.
Best Golf Bet B: Luke Donald +1000
Save for a 47th place finish at the U.S. Open, Donald has been awesome lately.
He finished 2nd at the BMW PGA Championship, 1st at the Madrid Masters, 3rd at the Celtic Manor Wales Open and 11th at the Open de France in 4 out of the last 5 tournaments he has played.
He’s a definite guy to consider betting on in this category.
Worst Golf Wager: Rory McIlroy +450/Lee Westwood +500
I don’t believe either guy is a good bet in this category mainly because the golf betting odds don’t justify their true chances of beating their fellow British and Irish competitors.
Rory missed the cut at the U.S. Open and the Masters. Lee has an injured calf that could affect his follow through. I’ll go elsewhere for value.
Best Underdog Golf Bet: Darren Clarke +2200
Clarke is coming off of a 2nd place finish at the Barclays Scottish Open.
He has been horrible at St. Andrews in the past with an 89th place finish in 2000 and a 114th place finish in 2005, but he’s really the best underdog bet to win the GB and Ireland category because of that 2nd place finish last week.
Others to Consider
Padraig Harrington +600 – - His game appears to be coming around. He book-ended 64’s in the Travelers Championship in his last to finish 5th in the tournament.
Justin Rose +650 – - He’s finished 1st, 9th and 1st in his last 3 tournaments on the PGA Tour. Yeah…he’s hot.
Ian Poulter +900 – - He’s fallen on hard times recently with a 91st at the BMW PGA Championship, but he did finish 10th at the Masters and won the WGC-Accenture earlier this year.
