Gulfstream Park Pick 3 of the Day
February 13, 2010
This is the first weekend for future book Kentucky Derby betting. Make sure to check out my article on Kentucky Derby future wagers and then put some money on the horse, or horses, you think might win the roses on the first Saturday in May.
Gulfstream Park figures to be one of the places where a handful of Kentucky Derby contenders will emerge. On Saturday, Gulfstream has two graded races on their card. Neither is Kentucky Derby prep but both figure to be extremely competitive. Both also make up 2 of the 3 legs in my Pick 3 for Saturday.
Pick 3: Gulfstream Park
Race-day: 2/13/2010
1st Leg: 4:12 pm EST
Race 7
Grade III Hurricane Bertie Stakes For Fillies and Mares Four Years Old and Up
6 ½ furlongs on dirt
Horses Used: 4-Kays And Jays, 5-Warbling, 10-Tar Heel Mom
Analysis: Gulfstream’s main track has been favoring speed since the first day of racing. It figures to favor speed again on Saturday, which is why Kays and Jays should be considered a top pick in the Hurricane Bertie. Kays and Jays will get the lead in this race and could very well steal it on the front end. Trainer Mike Mitchell is a 29% winner with his allowance horses moving to conventional dirt. Warbling finished 2nd in the Grade III Sugar Swirl Stakes in her last. She is now 2 and 1 out of 3 lifetime races. Should the speed falter in this, Warbling would be the logical choice to get to the finish line first. Tar Heel Mom is fast enough to stick with Kays and Jays for most of this race. The daughter of Flatter looked like a winner in the Sugar Swirl until getting caught in the final strides. If jockey Alan Garcia can harness her speed some, she could pose a threat to Kays and Jays in the lane.

Race 8
Allowance $48,000n$y For Fillies and Mares Four Years Old and Up
1 mile on turf
Horses Used: 1-Toocleverforwords, 5-Cruisin’nthebridle, 10-Proclaim, 11-Salsa Star
Analysis: Toocleverforwords will save a lot of ground breaking from the one hole and has speed ratings that make her competitive in this. She should also enjoy going back to a mile after running at 1 1/16th miles in her last. Cruisin’nthebridle hasn’t run since last November but trainer Michael Maker is 27% winners with his horses off the bench. Not only that, but Cruisin’nthebridle broke her maiden on the turf at this distance with Ramon Dominguez aboard. Dominguez takes the call on her in this race. Can lightning strike twice? Proclaim stretches out for trainer Harold James Bond and has every right to win first time going two turns and first time on the grass. After all, she was sired by Pulpit. Salsa Star ran some wicked fractions in her last before tiring in the lane and finishing third by 2 ¾ lengths. She runs a 1/16th of a mile less in this. That could make all the difference for the daughter Giant’s Causeway.
Race 9
Grade II Gulfstream Park Sprint Championship For Four Year Olds and Up
7 furlongs on dirt
Horses Used: 3-Solar Flare, 5-Munnings, 6-Presto Change O
Analysis: Solar Flare drops back to this 7 furlong distance after running at a route of ground in a minor stakes race at Aqueduct in November. Solar Flare can either press the pace or stalk from about 4 to 5 lengths off. Munnings will be the chalk in this and for good reason. The Todd Pletcher trained son of Speightstown has a record of 2-1-2 out of 5 lifetime races at the 7 furlong distance. Munnings should enjoy racing against this crowd after having to battle the likes of Kodiak Kowboy, Vineyard Haven and Rachel Alexandra in his last few races. Presto Change O is another Anthony Dutrow horse with a shot. He’s stepping up in class off of a 3rd place finish in a grade 3 race, but the works have been sterling and Dutrow is winning at a 31% clip at the meet.
