Horse Racing Betting Pick of the Day: Golden Gate Race 7
February 15, 2010
Horses line up to contest 6 furlongs over Golden Gate’s artificial Tapeta track in the 7th on Monday.
Often times low-level claiming races, like Golden Gates’ 7th on Monday, is the perfect place to find the best overlays. All of the horses in the 7th at Golden Gate, a $6,250 claimer, should have a chance to win the race.

2-Capital Cat – 6/1 morning horse betting odds
Capital Cat has never won out of 18 tries over Golden Gates’ main track. The reason isn’t because Capital Cat is just an awful horse at this level. It’s because Capital Cat is a straight closer and straight closers often times find that they have too much to do in the lane. Hopefully, jockey Julien Couton will keep Capital Cat out of trouble in this race. If he does, then the closer might have a shot as there appears to be plenty of speed signed up in this to help set up his late run.
4-I’m A Fly Boy – - 8/1 morning line odds
I’m A Fly Boy is another closer who could benefit from the expected hot pace. I’m A Fly Boy drops from the $12,500 claiming level where he lost by 6 ¾ lengths. Trainer John Buc doesn’t have the best numbers for these types of runners, but I’m A Fly Boy has the perfect style for this race. Also, it should be noted that 31% winning jockey Russell Baze takes the call on this guy. That says a lot about I’m A Fly Boy’s chances in this as Baze usually can choose whatever horse he wants to ride at races at this level in NoCal.
6-Kalookan Heat – - 7/5 morning line odds
Out of all of the speedsters, Kalookan Heat figures to hang better than the rest. The son of Unusual Heat finished first at the $12,500 claiming level in his last, his first race for trainer Armando Lage, and has enough speed to put away the rest of the front-runners in this. The only issue is that Kalookan Heat was disqualified from winning that $12,500 race and now Lage drops him to the $6,250 level. Maybe, the horse is hurt. Either way, taking 7 to 5 or worse odds on any horse in a race like this just doesn’t make sense.
Wagering Strategy
I will bet Capital Cat to win. I will bet an exacta with Capital Cat over Kalookan Heat and I’m A Fly Boy. I will reverse for less. I will also play a trifecta with Capital Cat keyed in all 3 spots, win, place and show, over a box made up of I’m A Fly Boy, Kalookan Heat and the other top speedster in this, Book It Thunder.
