Horse Racing Pick 3 from Fairgrounds in New Orleans
February 8, 2010
Race-day: 2/8/2010
1st Leg: 4:37 pm Central Time
The New Orleans Saints won the Super Bowl on Sunday and you would think that a lot of sports gamblers, and Saints’ fans, would be suffering a post-Super Bowl hangover this morning.
Who knows? They probably are, but that doesn’t mean that the Fairgrounds Racetrack in New Orleans isn’t going to be bumping with terrific racing action on Monday! It will be. The BetOnline online racebook, as always, will be offering track like betting. That includes track like betting on the Pick 3, which I consider one of the best wagers in horse racing.
Let’s take a look at the Fairground Pick 3 that begins in Race 8 on Monday.
Race 8
$62,500 n3x Allowance For Fillies and Mares Four Years Old and Up
1 1/16th miles on turf
Horses Used: 4-Pretty Squall, 5-Dancin Perfect, 8-Oculuna
Analysis: There isn’t a lot of speed in this which means that Pretty Squall should get a very decent trip either behind the front-runner or right on the pace. Pretty Squall has a victory on the Fairgrounds turf and continually meets or exceeds the speed-rating par for this level and at this distance. Dancin Perfect was obliterated in her last, the Furl Sails Handicap, but should bounce back in this. She had put together two terrific races in a row before the Furl Sails debacle and is 2-1 out of 6 lifetime races on Fairgrounds’ sod. Oculuna is stretching out to a mile after running in two 5 ½ furlong races on the turf. Trainer Thomas Amos is winning at a 28% clip at the meet and, like Pretty Squall, Oculuna should relish the likely pace in this race.
Race 9
Claiming $15,500 For Four Year Olds and Up
1 mile and 40 yards on the dirt
Horses Used: 5-Presents For Berti, 7-Lucky Tradition, 8-Weekend Pass
Analysis: Presents For Berti is dropping from the $30,000 claiming level to this race. That’s a 29% winning move for trainer Daniel Smithwick. Presents For Berti should be close in this based on class alone. Lucky Tradition is another dropper with a shot. Lucky Tradition figures to be close to the pace from the outset, if not on the lead, and could keep going depending on whether or not the gelding gets pressure. Weekend Pass is yet another dropper. Trainer Merrill Scherer wins with 22% of his turf to dirt horses and Weekend Pass should be able to get a good trip about 3 to 4 lengths off of the lead in this.
Race 10
Maiden Claiming $10,000 For Fillies and Mares Four and Five Years Old
5 ½ furlongs on dirt
Horses Used: 1/1A – Cherokee Caucus/Professional Cat, 2 – Go Hide And Watch, 6 – Classic Designer
Analysis: Cherokee Caucus is the better half of the entry as the horse had a terrific 2nd best of 122 works on February 1st and trainer Michael Stidham is winning 22 % at the meet. Professional Cat probably has no shot in this race as she has lost her last two by a combined 28 ¼ lengths. Go Hide and Watch gets blinkers and drops for 24% winning trainer Cody Autrey. The rail could help Go Hide And Watch as well. Classic Designer beat Go Hide And Watch in her last race for second. She too drops and figures as trainer Gary Scherer is 25% with his 2nd after the claim horses.
Combinations: 3 x 3 x 3 = 27
$1 Pick 3 = $27
