Jaguars Are a Football Betting Pick Fave to Beat Visiting Atlanta

September 2, 2010

The Jacksonville Jaguars are football betting favorites to beat the visiting Atlanta Falcons this Thursday in each team’s final game of the NFL Preseason

The Jags have been installed as favorites for the simple fact that neither team has been good or bad during the preseason. The Jags are the home team and, therefore, are the 3-point faves.

The Jaguars may be the favorites but that doesn’t automatically make them the team to back in the sportsbook.

NFL Betting Lines

Atlanta Falcons +3 -115 O 37 -110

Jacksonville Jaguars -3 -105 U 37 -110

The football betting lines and odds on this game tell us a couple of things. First, it tells us that the odds makers aren’t so sure about Jacksonville as a -3 favorite. After all, if you insist on taking the +3 on Atlanta, you’re going to have to risk more, -115 to -105. In fact, this line is almost even considering how the risk vs. reward shapes up.

The second thing the odds tell us is that at least one of these teams is not going to do a whole lot of scoring in this game. The total is listed as 37 points. Not 38 or even 37 ½, just 37. That’s it.

Because of the strange betting line against the spread that the odds makers have come up with, I’m going to concentrate on the total in this game. Going back in Jacksonville’s history, it’s obvious that they’ve considered the final game of the NFL Preseason to be somewhat important.

Well, if not important, than at least a game that they should use in which to sharpen their offense. In 2006, the Jags scored 20 points in a 20 to 17 victory over Atlanta in the final NFL Preseason game. In 2007, the Jags scored 31 points. In 2008, the Jags scored 24 points and in 2009, the Jags scored 24 points again.

Atlanta’s point totals in the final NFL Preseason game since 2006 have been 14 against the Jags, 13 against Baltimore, 10 against Baltimore and 3 last season once again against the Baltimore Ravens.

It’s obvious that the Jaguars are probably going to put the ball into the end zone and that the Falcons probably are not. It’s doubtful that Atlanta, who after scoring 20 points in the first NFL Preseason game this year has since scored 10 and 6 points, will garner more than 10 points in this game.

The Jaguars could possibly beat Atlanta by way more than 3 points, but it makes more sense for sports gamblers to look towards the football betting over under for their wager on this game Thursday. And what would that pick be? On the under, of course.

Yes, the Jags could put up 37 points by themselves but that’s doubtful. I like the under in this game.
