Make Horse Racing Wagers on These Saratoga Races
September 1, 2010
Before horseplayers make horse racing wagers on the Grade I Travers Stakes on Saturday, they should take a look at a couple of the undercard races.
I’ve analyzed two of the undercard races on Saturday’s Saratoga card where I believe an overlaid bet or two might be found.
One of those races I didn’t analyze in this article is the Grade I King’s Bishop because in my opinion Discreetly Mine, the 6/5 chalk in the King’s Bishop, can’t be beat.

Take a look at who I believe will win the Grade II Ballston Spa Handicap and the Grade I Ballerina Stakes.
Saratoga Stakes Races – August 28th
Where: Saratoga Springs, NY
When: August 28th, 2010
TV: TVG and HRTV
Race 8
Time: 3:30 pm EST
Ballston Spa Handicap (Grade II)
Purse $200,000. For Fillies And Mares Three-Years-Old And Upward.
1 1/16th miles inner turf
The Saratoga turf course has been much kinder to closers lately. That’s good news for Phola who had way too much to do in the Grade I Diana at the top of the stretch in order to win that race. The pace should be much quicker than the :49 half mile that Phola had to run into in the Grade I Diana as well and her morning line odds are nice.
I’ll make her a part of all of my horse racing wagers on this race on Saturday including putting her on top in my trifecta. Cherokee Queen never got a chance to show her best in the Grade III Matchmaker at Monmouth Park in her last after throwing jockey Elvis Trujillo.
She picks up jockey Julien Leparoux and that could make all of the difference in this as Leparoux was aboard for her victory at Philly Park two races back. Miss Keller is likely to go off as the favorite in this race because she breaks from the rail, where she can save ground, and is in excellent form.
- Phola
- Cherokee Queen
- Miss Keller
Race 10
Time: 4:38 pm EST
Ballerina Stakes (Grade I)
Purse $250,000. For Fillies And Mares Three-Years-Old And Upward.
7 furlongs over dirt
The front runners should set things up for Jessica Is Back to win this. Yes, Jessica Is Back has run on the lead before but that was in route races. In her last race, a victory in the 6 furlong Grade I Princess Rooney, she sat about 2 to 3 lengths off of the pace before making a big move and beating Warbling to the finish line.
She’s the pick. Informed Decision will most likely go off as the favorite in this because she’s a multiple Grade I winner that has won 13 out of 18 lifetime races. However, most of her victories have occurred over artificial surfaces.
Still, the race does set up for Informed Decisions’ style and it’s hard for me to see her finishing worse than second in this. Rightly So is the speed of the speed and could wire this field if nobody is brave enough to go with her.
She gets the rail and will dare Warbling or Qualia to push her. If neither one of them does, then she’s the one that will most likely get her picture taken.
- Jessica Is Back
- Informed Decision
- Rightly So
Good luck!
