Florida State Seminoles vs. Miami Hurricanes
Game Date/Time: Saturday, October 9th, TBA
Game Location: Orange Bowl, Miami, FL
TV/Radio Broadcast: TBA
The Seminoles are expecting big things this year under first year head coach Jimbo Fisher. Fisher’s offense worked like a charm last season, as he turned Christian Ponder into a legitimate pro prospect. Now, there are Heisman watchers keeping a close eye on Florida State’s signal caller, and this could be a make or break game for him in that department.
Still, FSU had a major problem defensively last year that was shown in that Labor Day loss to the Canes on its home turf. Miami was able to run up and down the field and do virtually whatever it wanted. The Noles allowed a whopping 30.0 points per game last year, something that was absolutely unheard of for the majority of the L/3 decades. That left the garnet and gold ranked 94th in the country. Giving up 433.8 yards per game was 108th.
The offensive line, full of third and fourth year starters, is going to be the strength of this team. Regardless of injuries, this is an incredibly deep line that should be able to stand up to Miami’s front seven quite well. Can Ponder outscore the Canes? That’s the big question, as the defense, though slightly improved, will be nowhere near dominant.
Jacory Harris should be licking his chops about going against this ‘D’ again. He threw for a whopping 386 yards and two scores against the Noles last year in Tallahassee, and that really began this season’s Heisman Trophy campaign for him. Keep a close eye on both Travis Benjamin and Leonard Hankerson, as Florida State hasn’t had much of an answer for either player in their respective careers at "The U."
Miami’s defense stunk like Florida State’s did a few years ago, but Randy Shannon has done a good job of retooling this unit. The Hurricanes only allowed 22.2 points per game, so whereas last year’s 38 points allowed was the norm for the Seminoles, the 34 allowed by Miami wasn’t nearly the average output.
When lines were up, the Canes were five point favorites in this rivalry, which is a number that seems about right. However, Florida State should be a hyped up team at this point, as it should still be undefeated. Grab those five points if you can find them and cash in on your NCAA football predictions.
