MLB Betting Insider – Bet On Baseball’s Best Pitching Ballclubs

May 10, 2010

The age-old adage that good pitching beats good hitting has been in existence almost since the sport of baseball was invented well over two centuries ago – and thanks to that long-standing fact, today’s generation of Major League Baseball betting enthusiasts can cash in with winning wagers more often than not by simply backing the team with the better pitching staff or starter for a particular game or series.

This look at baseball’s best pitching staff will give MLB betting fanatics the insight they need to make more payday-producing MLB baseball picks than ever.

1. St. Louis 2.68 ERA .235 BA
Led by Adam Wainwright (5-1, 2.08 ERA) and Chris Carpenter (4-0, 2.80 ERA) the Cardinals have the best starting pitching staff in all of baseball. In addition to the aforementioned pair of Cy Young candidates, young southpaw Jamie Garcia and veteran right-hander Brad Penny each has recorded identical 3-2 records with fantastic ERA’s under 2.00.

2. Tampa Bay 2.78 ERA .222
Young left-hander David Price (4-1, 1.91 ERA) is living up to his billing as one of the game’s best young arms and future Cy Young contender while Matt Garza (5-1, 2.09 ERA), Jeff Niemann (2.23 ERA), James Shields (4-1, 3.13 ERA) and second-year right-hander Wade Davis (3.18 ERA) have all been very good for the Rays to say the least. Hold on to your hats for this bankroll-boosting stat MLB gamblers, but just two of Tampa Bay’s dozen pitchers have an ERA over 3.18.

3. San Diego 2.80 ERA .224 BA
In the words of the fictional TV character Gomer Pyle, ‘Well, golly’ Veteran right-hander Jon garland (4-2, 1.71 ERA) has been lights-out for the rebuilding Padres, but it is the team’s phenomenal corps of relievers that has really been the key to San Diego’s success. Chris Young, Tim Stauffer, Wade LeBlanc and Heath Bell have combined to go a payday-producing 7-1 while all compiling mind-blowing ERA’s under 1.29.

4. San Francisco 3.04 ERA .215 BA
I take it former A Cy Young winner Barry Zito (5-0, 1.49 ERA) was serious when he said he was going to get back to being a staff ace kind of pitcher prior to the regular season. Combine Zito with ‘The Freak’ Lincecum (4-0, 1.86 ERA) Matt Cain (2-1, 2.79 ERA) and Jonathan Sanchez (2-2, 3.00 ERA) and it’s easy to see why the Giants have been so successful in the early going this season.

5. Minnesota 3.51 ERA .261 BA
If you like baseball, then you’ve gotta’ love the overachieving Minnesota Twins. Despite not having a single starter with an ERA under 2.36 (Francisco Liriano), the Twins have managed to rank fifth in all of baseball in terms of pitching staffs. Of course, having four fine relievers with respective ERA’s under 2.08 always helps.

The Best of the Rest
6. Seattle 3.58 ERA .243 BA
7. NY Yankees 3.59 ERA .236 BA
8. NY Mets 3.60 ERA .248 BA
9. Colorado 3.63 ERA .239 BA
10. Philadelphia 3.67 ERA .257
