Monday Morning Quarterback: Upsets Galore in NFL Week 2

September 21, 2009

This Sunday was full of upsets in the NFL. I am at 10 for 15 for my NFL betting picks; including big upsets by the Cardinals, Ravens, Bears, and Giants.

QB Jay Cutler won wearing the Chicago Blue for the first time as the Bears upset the defending Super Bowl Champions Steelers 17-14. Cutler finished with 236 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions after being picked off a career-high four times in a season opening loss at Green Bay. Without a doubt he took advantage of Troy Palamalu’s absence, like I said he would in the NFL Betting Picks Week 2 article.

Chicago’s D had a nice game with a couple of sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery. The game was played as we predicted, however nobody thought Kicker Jeef Reed was going to miss two field goals from well within his range.

Another big game was played in San Diego as the Baltimore Ravens upset the Chargers 31-26. Despite the Ravens’ defense allowing a monster afternoon to San Diego QB Philip Rivers who threw a career-high 436 yards and two touchdowns; the LB Ray Lewis had a monumental tackle on RB Darren Sproles in the final play in the 4 th quarter on the 4 th down to preserve the Baltimore win.

Another huge winng pick for the NFL betting fans for this week was the Giants victory in Dallas 33-31 to spoil the Cowboys’ home opener.

QB Tony Romo had an awful 29.6 passer rating, finishing 13 of 29 for 127 yards with two scores (one rushing) and three picks.

Even with Romo’s dreadful performance the Giants had to wait until the last second to claim their win as K Lawrence Tynes kicked the winning 37-yard field goal.

On the hand we can’t leave out the fact that I wasn’t expecting the Bengals to win in Green Bay or the Raiders wining in Kansas City, but most of all I was not expecting that Rex Ryan’s big mouth was actually on the money as the Jets upset the Patriots 16-9.

Also, the Titans pass defense has looked vulnerable which was one of the best things they had last year. So far they had allowed 678 yards and five touchdowns in their first 2 games this season. The Titans were defeated at home by the Texans 34-31.

Teams that looked better than I expected: Bengals, 49ers, ante the Jets.

Teams that looked worse: Cowboys (Tony Romo’s fault), Redskins, Titans, Chief and Packers.
