Mountain West Conference Power Poll – BYU in the BCS?

September 9, 2009

Overall, the Mountain West Conference didn’t have a great week of football betting, but the BYU Cougars captured the biggest prize of the weekend. Take a look at how BetOnline stacks up the nine-team conference with this week’s power poll…

1: BYU Cougars (1-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) Sure, QB Sam Bradford wasn’t in the lineup for the majority of game, but it’s hard to say that BYU didn’t really earn its outright victory as a hefty underdog in Dallas. Not only is that the type of win that can boost the Cougs to the BCS, but if they can beat Florida State in a couple weeks, we may be talking about this team playing for a National Championship come January.

Up Next: Home vs. Tulane

2: Colorado State Rams (1-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) The Rams shocked their in-state rivals from Colorado 23-17. RB Leonard Mason rushed for 107 yards, but CSU won this game because of its dominance on the defensive line. In spite of the fact that the Buffaloes may have one of the most talented running back crops in the country, they only ran the ball 21 times for 29 yards. The Rams should be 2-0 after this week.

Up Next: Home vs. Weber State

3: Air Force Falcons (0-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) Yeah, Nichols State probably isn’t the greatest opponent in the world, but any time you can roll up 72 points and 474 rushing yards in a game, you’ve done something truly impressive. Connor Dietz, Nathan Walker, Asher Clark, Savier Stephens, and Jared Tew all rushed for at least 50 yards in the 72-0 whitewashing.

Up Next: Away @ Minnesota

4: UNLV Runnin’ Rebels (0-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) The Rebels had an impressive 38-3 opening weekend victory over Sacramento State. Winning a game against an FCS opponent by just 35 points isn’t the most eye-popping feat in the world, but it’s a heck of a lot better than a lot of bigger FBS programs did against teams from the second division last week. The fun and games end for UNLV this week.

Up Next: Home vs. Oregon State

5: TCU Horned Frogs (0-0 ATS, 0-0 SU) TCU was one of the few teams across the nation that didn’t kick off play last week, but it received some fantastic news and some horrible news in the process. The good news? Playing BYU is going to look a heck of a lot better in the computer rankings now that it has beaten Oklahoma. The bad news? Virginia’s loss to William & Mary isn’t going to help any…

Up Next: Away @ Virginia

6: Wyoming Cowboys (0-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) For Wyoming, any victory is welcome, even if it does come against Weber State. The offense was solid, racking up 434 yards in the 29-22 victory, but there’s something about allowing 411 yards and 22 points to an FCS opponent that has to be disconcerting, especially with the Longhorns coming to town this week.

Up Next: Home vs. Texas

And the rest…

7: Utah Utes (0-1 ATS, 1-0 SU)

8: New Mexico Lobos (0-1 ATS, 0-1 SU)

9: San Diego State Aztecs (0-1 ATS, 0-1 SU)
