NCAA Football Betting – Eastern Michigan vs Nevada

September 2, 2010

The Eastern Washington Eagles travel to Reno to take on the ferocious Nevada Wolf Pack in their season opener. The college football betting experts aren’t giving the Eagles much of a chance in this one and with good reason.  It’s a rarity a Division 1-AA, four-touchdown underdog to knock off a Division 1 opponent but when you are betting on football, there is always a chance for the underdog to cover the spread.

The college football odds have set the Nevada Wolf Pack as -28 point favorites and the game total is set at 67½ points in what should be a high scoring affair.

The Nevada Wolf Pack opened the 2009 season in South Bend Indiana against the ranked Notre Dame team; they were shut out 35-0. This year the team expects a much better result against a team that is in the Division 1-AA.  While we won’t say it can’t happen, as everyone remembers Appalachian States’ 34-32 upset victory over then number 5 ranked Michigan but the chances are slim.

The Nevada Wolf Pack will use this game as a warm up for the rest of their season and a chance to see how much the team has improved over 2009. During training camp, the team focused on improving the team’s defense, last season they were prone to giving up huge plays to their opponents and that cost them a few games.

Nevada’s quarterback Colin Kaepernick is a definite duel threat; in fact, he only needs 222 to pass Florida’s Tim Tebow, Central Michigan’s Dan LeFevour and Texas’ Vince Young to move into 12th place on the NCAA’s list of all-time rushing yards for a quarterback. If he lights it up this season he has a chance to pass Pat White as the NCAA’s all-time leader in quarterback rushing yards. He’ll need 1575 yards to do it.

Other than his legs, Kaepernick needs to throw for the Wolf Pack to get out of their seven or eight win rut they have been in over the last few seasons.  He’s been solid completing 60% of his passes and tossing 20 touchdowns with just six interceptions.

Eastern Michigan won’t win this game but transfer quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell should put up some nice numbers against the questionable Wolf Pack secondary.  Helping Mitchell will be running back Taiwan Jones, Jones totaled more than 2300 all-purpose yards and scored 19 touchdowns.

The Wolf Pack are the winners tonight but expect EMU to score a few on the Wolf Pack secondary and that will be enough to keep them within four touchdowns to give them a win on the football betting spread.
