NCAA Football Betting Results for Best “Under” Teams This Season

September 1, 2010

A number of teams did a fantastic job of taking the air out of the football and producing a bunch of low scoring contests last year. BetOnline Sportsbook looks at the NCAA football betting results for the best ‘under’ teams in America in 2009.

Nebraska Cornhuskers (11-3 in 2009) – Without a shadow of a doubt, Big Red had some big, big defensive numbers last year. Head coach Bo Pelini rightfully gave the black shirts back to his defense after allowing just 271.7 yards per game. Nebraska had the best scoring ‘D’ in the land at just 10.4 points per game, including holding mighty Texas down in the Big XII Championship Game. Ndamukong Suh might be playing on Sundays now, but that doesn’t mean that this defense is going to let up. As long as the offense exclusively revolves around Roy Helu, there will still be plenty of ‘unders’ to celebrate for NCAA football betting fans throughout the 2010-11 season.

Vanderbilt Commodores (9-2 in 2009) – Poor Vanderbilt has a lot of issues to deal with right now. Star tailback Warren Norman just had some knee surgery that will keep him out for at least the next week or two. He led the nation’s 49th ranked rushing attack and was named SEC Offensive Freshman of the Year in ’09. Parlay in there the fact that the team still doesn’t have a legitimate quarterback to speak of and is royally going to miss the coaching abilities of the suddenly departed Bobby Thompson, and the equation is ripe for a disastrous year for the ‘Dores. The only question is whether the defense is going to be good enough to keep games ‘under’ the number or not.

Oklahoma Sooners (10-3 in 2009) – The Sooners were rocked early last year by the loss of Sam Bradford to a shoulder injury that kept him out for the season. They were blessed to have Landry Jones available to back him up, but when push came to shove, the offense just wasn’t as good as the defense was. In the pass happy Big XII, there were plenty of relatively low scoring games to choose from. NCAA football betting aficionados must not forget how good this defense is, as it was no mistake to see 272.6 yards and 14.5 points per game on the board on the average day.

Army Black Knights (9-3 in 2009) – Simply put, when you run the triple option and don’t do it all that well, but you still successfully keep other teams off the field, you’re going to play to a lot of ‘under’ games. That’s exactly what happened last year for the Black Knights. This season, the defense still looks to be remotely strong, and if that keeps up, the Black Knights will not only be forcing the oddsmakers to post ‘totals’ in the low to mid 30s, but it will also probably put them in a bowl game for the first time in decades.
