NCAAB Games of the Week – UConn vs. Georgetown and Duke vs. Georgia Tech

January 9, 2010

College basketball betting gets its first taste of conference play with a busy weekend. There are plenty of league rivalries headlining the board. Here’s a look at two:

Connecticut Huskies at Georgetown Hoyas

The Huskies picked up a big win over Seton Hall on Wednesday night, getting a strong performance from forward Gavin Edwards off the bench. The senior reserve has been a spark for UConn, scoring more than 11 points per game. Edwards will come in handy on the defensive end when the Huskies try to contain Georgetown center Greg Monroe.

Monroe was swarmed by the Marquette Golden Eagles in the Hoyas’ 62-59 loss on Wednesday. He took just six shots, making four and totaling only nine points. The game before that, Monroe scored only 10 points, taking just six shots from the field. Georgetown needs the sophomore to be more aggressive in order to keep pace with UConn’s frontcourt.

Duke Blue Devils at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Duke stomped the Iowa State Cyclones on Wednesday night, handcuffing ISU star forward Craig Brackins for just 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting. The Blue Devils defense is in top form heading into ACC play. They’ve allowed under 60 points per game to start the year, holding opponents to under 38 percent shooting. Duke will have its sights set on Georgia Tech freshman phenom Derrick Favors on Saturday.

Favors has struggled to score in each of the last two games, putting up just 14 combined points including only eight points in the Yellow Jackets’ loss to the Georgia Bulldogs on Tuesday. Favors has been inconsistent, averaging just over 12 points a game. While his scoring is down, the 6-foot-10 leaper is a defensive failsafe in the paint, averaging nine rebounds and more than two blocks a game.
