NHL Betting – 3 Game Preview for Saturday’s Action

January 17, 2010

Only a few weeks to either make up ground or cement your position before the 2 week Olympic break.  Time to separate the contenders from the pretenders.

Pittsburgh Penguins (31-18-1) at Vancouver Canucks (27-18-8)

This is probably the marquee matchup in Saturday’s action.  Sidney Crosby continues his tour of Western Canada with a stop in beautiful Vancouver to face the struggling Canucks.  After a low point in the season, the Penguins are starting to gain momentum once again.

Coming off of the difficult Alberta sweep, the Penguins will look to finish up their road trip with a 4-1 record.  It appears that the Pens have picked the right time to pay a visit to the Canucks.

After an impressive win streak, the Canucks have hit the skids a bit of late.  The scoring hasn’t been as prolific and Roberto Luongo hasn’t been that razor sharp goalie that the Canucks depend on.  Every team goes through their ups and downs during a season and it appears that the Penguins are on an “up” and the Canucks are on a “down”.

Buffalo Sabres (28-11-5) at New York Islanders (20-19-8)

The Buffalo Sabres are one of the nice surprises in the NHL this year.  They are sitting 2nd in the Eastern Conference and are as good on the road as they are at home.  In the last 10 games, the Sabres boast a very tidy 7-1-2 record.  They are a complete team that can afford a few mistakes because of the stand out goaltending or Ryan Miller.  Any time that you have Miller in net, you have a chance to win the game.  Buffalo is hot, and are proof that if you play together as a team, good things can happen.

The New York Islanders are almost as hot as the Buffalo Sabres.  They are 7-1-2 in their last 10 games and are coming off an impressive 6-0 shutout of the Detroit Red Wings.  This is a young team and unfortunately you never know what you are going to get.  A little confidence goes a long way however.  Expect the Islanders to give the Sabres trouble on Saturday and continue their push for a most improbable playoff berth.

Tampa Bay Lightning (18-18-10) at Florida Panthers (19-20-8)

The Battle of Florida is between two teams going in different directions.  The Tampa Bay Lightning have finally started playing to their potential and are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games.  The talent on the Lightning are finally earning their paychecks.  The Lightning are only 4 points out of a playoff spot and are looking to put a miserable start of the season behind them.

And don’t think that the Canadian Olympic Team snubs of Vinnie Lecavalier, Steven Stamkos and Martin St. Louis don’t have the boys motivated.

The Florida Panthers are a team that is in a tailspin.  They are 3-6-1 and are losing to some pretty bad teams.  It’s hard to know what to make from this bunch.  The are a collection of nobody’s that fail to execute a system that a rag-tag bunch need in order to be successful (like New Jersey, Buffalo and Nashville).  This team has no spark, no mojo and is destined to finish in the bottom third of the NHL.
