Padding Your Bankroll – Horse Plays of the Day
April 24, 2009
Friday is closing day at Keeneland, one last chance for us to pad our bankroll before the spring meeting ends.
There is a solid ten race card on tap, and today’s Pick 3 play is a $32 wager that includes six runners in the three race sequence that are 8/1 or higher on the morning line.
If we are lucky enough to nail this play, it would be a great way to end the meet.
Today’s Play of the Day from Aqueduct:
AQU Race 5 Clm $25,000 (2:56 et)
#5 Aly’s Wheat 5/1
#4 King’s Coronation 9/2
#6 Inside Zone 6/1
#1 Ship’s Piano / #1a Incalzando 7/2
Analysis: #5 Aly’s Wheat checked in second last out going a mile on the main track in a race taken off the turf. The gelding was claimed two back for $14K by the Contessa barn, likely with the intention of moving this guy back on the grass. Three of his five career wins have come on the lawn.
#4 King’s Coronation is making his first start since January for the Klesaris barn that is 22% winners with horses coming back off a 61-180 day layoff. This gelding is by far the most accomplished on the turf in this field, a seven time winner on the grass with grass earnings of $233K. The gelding has been prepping at Del park and when this barn ships them up to NY, they are usually live.
Wagering
WIN: #5 to win at 3/1 or better.
EX: 4,5 / 1,4,5,6
TRI: 4,5 / 1,4,5,6 / 1,3,4,5,6
Today’s Pick 3 Play from Keeneland:
Starting in Race 3: $1: 1,2,5,8 / 3,5,6,11 / 1,5 = $32
KEE Race 3 Md Sp Wt (2:05 et)
#5 Vancy Shoes, #1 Lela, #8 Credit Crunch, #2 Nstangratification
#5 Vancy Shoes has a couple of bullet works on the morning tab for the Reed barn that is 15% winners with first time starters. The filly is by Van Nistelrooy (8% winners with debut runners) out of a General Assembly mare that has dropped seven foals to race, all winners including a pair of stakes winners, top earner Pyramyst ($327K). Debuts with lasix and the 8/1 ML looks fair although if this gal is live the price is going to be lighter.
#1 Lela makes her debut for the Asmussen barn that is 18% winners with firsters. The filly is by Trippi (15% winners with debut runners) out of a Carson City mare that has dropped four winners including stakes winner Rojo Toro ($269K). The works are not jumping off the page but the barn has them ready and seldom do we see brisk works.
KEE Race 4 Clm $20,000N2L (2:35 et)
#6 Knack, #11 Scrimpy, #5 Nickel Pickle, #3 Uno Ducksy
#6 Knack returns off a two month break and faces winners for the second time. Last out he took on $30K non winners of two at Turfway, checking in third behind a pair of next out winners. The winner Royale With Speed beat $30K non winners of three in his next start while runner up Attractive Ride beat Alw-1 optional claimers in his next outing on 3/6. The gelding gets an upgrade in jocks to Edgar and we should catch a fair price in a wide open race.
#11 Scrimpy actually beat our top pick three back when breaking his maiden for a $30K tag. The colt then faces stakes company in his first start against winners and was badly outrun. He bounced back with a decent effort last out in a third place finish against Alw-2L company at Mountaineer. It is back to poly here and a better spot tagged for $20K and facing non winners of two.
KEE Race 5 Clm $40,000 (3:05 et)
#1 Officer Rocket, #5 New Believer
#1 Officer Rocket dropped in for a $50K tag last out after starting in four stakes in his previous starts since getting claimed by the Maker barn for $80K last December. The five year old checked in third last out and although it was for a tag, he caught a couple of tough runners. The winner Tempo Fire is now 7 for 10 in his career and the runner up was multiple stakes winner Atticus Kristy, who has won $695K. This looks like an easier spot here for the top notch connections.
#5 New Believer beat Alw-1 company last out and is now 2 for 2 over the poly here. It took seven tries to pass his first allowance condition and instead of looking for a Alw-2 race the high % barn brings him back tagged here in a good spot for $40K. It is an aggressive spot as the barn might lose him here, but the barn does put them in where they can win and the trainer is part owner of this gelding.
Price Plays From Aqueduct:
These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
R3: #5 Charming Mandate 8/1
R4: #5 See Me 12/1
R9: 32 Princess Maura 15/1
Good luck padding your bankroll today!
