Saratoga Betting – With Rains Coming Down, Think About Betting A Mudder in Race 8 at Saratoga on July 24th
July 24, 2010
The rains should continue Friday night and well into Saturday making it very difficult to find a winner in any of the scheduled turf races at Saratoga on Saturday.
Luckily, Race 8 at Saratoga is on the dirt. Not only is it on the dirt, but also the horse I like to win it should relish the mud.

7 furlongs over dirt
7-Happy Week – - 4/1 morning line odds
Todd Pletcher saddles Happy Week. The daughter of Distorted Humor has a record of 1-2-2 out of 6 lifetime races.
She’s also bred, with a Deputy Minister mare on the bottom, to absolutely love the mud. Since she’s never run over it before, I’m expecting that she’s going to hold at least her 4 to 1 morning line odds and might actually drift higher because of all of the love being thrown towards Ash Zee.
It’s only a matter of time before Happy Week takes that huge step forward. That step might occur in the 8th at Saratoga on Saturday.
6-Patience Drive – - 8/1 morning line odds
Patience Drive is 1-1-1 out of 3 races over an off-track. The Pulpit progeny is also 1-3-0 out of 5 races at the 7-furlong distance.
Patience Drive no doubt will be lost in the betting because it took her 7 races to break her maiden. Since then, however, she’s been pretty good finishing 2nd in an allowance and 3rd in a $60,000 stakes.
The mud improves her chances as does the fact that trainer Seth Benzel is 24% first time off of a layoff and Patience Drive hasn’t run since November of last year.
4-Ash Zee – - 2/1 morning line odds
Many feel that Ash Zee is going to take the lead in this race and just run on with it. Although that’s possible, there are some knocks against the morning line favorite.
First, she’s never run over an off-track and although she should be okay, she isn’t bred to absolutely love the mud. Second, she’s coming into this off of her maiden victory.
Finally, that maiden win occurred at Churchill Downs. The Twin Spires is a top-notch racetrack, yes, but the quality of those animals usually isn’t as good as what you find at Saratoga.
I believe Ash Zee gets over bet to win because of that maiden victory and the fact that Steve Asmussen trains her.
Horse Wagering Strategy
Happy Week looks like a solid bet in my mind. I’m going to bet Happy Week to win and place.
I will be an exacta with Happy Week over Ash Zee and Patience Drive. I will reverse the exacta for less.
Good luck!
