Super Bowl 44 Parlay – Picking the Super Bowl and Northern Trust Open Winners

February 3, 2010

The PGA Tour, unlike some of the other major sports organizations in the United States, won’t shy away from the Super Bowl this Sunday. Sure, the Tour will attempt to conclude their 4 th round before the Super Bowl kicks off at roughly 6:25 pm EST on Sunday, but they’re not going to suspend play should Ryo Ishikawa, the Japanese superstar, and Phil Mickelson, America’s top player at the moment, find themselves in a sudden death playoff.

In other words, the PGA is going to “attempt” to stay out of the NFL’s way. Not that the NFL cares, of course. Who should care? Sports gamblers. By parlaying the Super Bowl winner, either ATS or on the Super Bowl moneyline, with a few golfers in a couple of tournament matchups in the NTO, bettors have a shot to score on a same day Super Bowl cross-sports parlay at what could be nice odds.

That’s rare, my friends. Very, very rare.

So, which Super Bowl team am I going to parlay with a few golfers to win a couple of individual matchups in the NTO? The New Orleans Saints, of course, at +165 on the money-line. If you want to know why, go no further then checking out my pick article. I detail the reasons there.

Now to the real athletes playing this weekend (well, the athletes us couch potatoes all strive to be!)!

Golfers to Parlay in the NTO with the Saints to Win Super Bowl 44

Phil Mickelson -150

Steve Stricker +120

Parlay Stricker at +120: Stricker is going off at much better odds than Mickelson and, yes, Mickelson destroyed the NTO field last year shooting a 15 under…wait, destroyed? Oh, I’m sorry, is that Stricker’s name at -14 on the 2009 NTO results page?

I believe that the whole Ping 2 Wedge controversy embroiling Phil right now is going to affect his game yet again this week. Stricker beating Phil wouldn’t be a huge surprise anyhow to me and the odds are very, very nice.

So, roll with Stricker is what I say.

Potential Payout with Stricker: $100 yields $483 profit

Davis Love -130

Vijay Singh Ev

Parlay Vijay Singh at Ev: Singh hasn’t finished in the Top 10 in a tournament since the AT&T National in July of 2009. That’s a span of 6 PGA Tour Events. Is Vijay over the hill? Probably, but so is Love.

Vijay won the FedEx Cup, the PGA Tour’s Championship, in 2008. Love did okay in the Sony Open, finishing 5 th, but you have to go all the way back to November of 2008 to find Love’s last victory. The tournament he won, the Children’s Miracle Network, isn’t even considered one of the more competitive tournaments on the Tour.

Vijay should get it going and beat Love in this matchup.

Potential Payout with Singh: $100 yields $430 profit

Michael Sim -120

Rickie Fowler -110

Parlay Rickie Fowler at -110: Sim finished 2 nd in the Farmer’s Insurance Open last week after shooting a 12 under, true, but Fowler finished tied for 5 th only one stroke off of Sim and was actually much, much more consistent.

In the FIO last week, Sim shot a 73, 62, 70 and 71 while Fowler shot a 67, 70, 70, and 70. Counting on consistency more than a huge round, like Sim’s 62 Round 2 in the FIO, will yield positive results more often. That will be Sim’s downfall in this matchup.

Fowler’s the one to use in the parlay.

Potential Payout with Fowler: $100 yields $405 profit
