Tennis Betting Verdict : Robredo finally snapped a four-match losing streak when he won his Bastad opener. Robredo beat Michal Przysiezny in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-3.
This is definitely a positive sign for the Spaniard who has been in a bit of a slump lately. Early exits in Barcelona, Roland Garros, s’Hertogenbosch and Wimbledon were disappointing results for the former top-ten player regardless of being a veteran at 28-years-old and competing in a game overrun by players in their prime (20-25 years-old).
Certainly, the win adds shine to his favourite odds in this round and a bit more belief in him, more so than in the first round because there was an air of uncertainty over those tennis odds brought on by questionable form.
This will be the first-ever meeting between Robredo and Golubev. The Kazakhstan native is an appealing talent but has yet to crack the top 50 in his career. At 22-years old, Golubev’s tipping point stands at No.56 in the world, which he managed last year.
This season has been trying for him on the ATP circuit. Save for a quarterfinal appearance in Belgrade, he has struggled in each event – so much so that he has had to make several forays into the Challenger circuit to keep his game sharp and his ranking somewhat decent.
On paper, Robredo has the significant edge over Golubev. At -275, the Spaniard is a good bet to win and to all intents and purposes, he should win. The match is on his racquet. Question is has he really snapped his negative trend? Are we reading too much into his opening victory over an unheralded Przysiezny.
Golubev is good enough to give him a real run for his money but I am not so sure he is confident enough to mastermind the “on paper” upset. This makes Robredo my pick after all.
