Tennis Betting: Can anyone stop Juan Carlos Ferrero

February 23, 2010

Acapulco, Mexico – Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero has been tearing up a storm in South America wining back-to-back titles in Costa do Sauipe and Copa Telmex. Undefeated in two tournaments, ten matches, Ferrero is looking to extend that winning streak in Acapulco and a third title to his collection. Naturally, the tipping question is how long he can continue this form on clay. When asked the question, or something along those lines, after winning the title in Copa Telmex over his compatriot David Ferrer, he said, “I think the key to my current success is the physical work I have done. I have been working very hard and I know that I can be on the court forever.” There you have it – he is going to be tough to beat.

Diego Junqueira is the first player who will give it his best shot in Acapulco. It will be the first career meeting between Argentinean Junqueira and Ferrero. Junqueira could not have more on paper disadvantage than he already has – ranked at No.192 and winless on the season at 0-1, he has as good a chance to win this match, as I have to win a Pulitzer Prize for this article. And the market reflects this sentiment with extremely one-sided action.

Tennis Betting Verdict: Juan Carlos Ferrero is 10-2 on the season with two titles, entirely comprised of his successful South American clay court run. Prior to descending on South America, Ferrero was tripped up in Auckland and Melbourne in the opening round. But he quickly found his rhythm and game on the red stuff.

Ferrero is the whopping favourite at -1000 to win outright, natch. His impressive form is even more impressive because he is one of several seasoned veterans competing during this four week South American stint and while many of his counterparts have struggled, he has proven to be a relevant and viable force in the game.

Junqueira has his work cut out for him if he is to mastermind the upset. Although I don’t know how he would do it as he hasn’t shown any kind of encouraging form to date. He is winless on the season and clearly out of his depth against Ferrero and his ilk – a former world No.1 and French Open champion. For Junqueira, this match will most likely about pride and he will look to account well. If he can make it competitive, the value plays would be to cover the spread at +5 -125 and Over 19 ½ -130.
