Tennis Betting: WTA Acapulco Quick Expert Picks

February 22, 2010

Acapulco, Mexico – Tennis bettors are spoilt for choice this week with five events on the tennis-betting menu, one of which is the WTA Abierto Mexicana telcel, featuring Venus Williams defending her title in Acapulco. The draw is stacked with several noteworthy players in Agnes Szavay, Sara Errani and Pauline Parmentier – ladies with some credible clay court skills. Hijacking the title from the reigning queen Venus will be a tall order for this trio – heck, all asunder – but they might try. Fortune favours the brave after all. Might this trio be brave enough?

Tennis Betting Line:

Sandra Zahlavova +5 -115 +300 19½ O -110 U -130
Agnes Szavay -5 -125 -500 19½ O -110 U -130

First Set Line: Sandra Zahlavova +225 Agnes Szavay -350

Match Time: 06:00 PM Eastern Time Monday February 22, 2010

Tennis Betting Verdict: Second seed, Agnes Szavay of Hungary takes on Sandra Zahlavova of the Czech Republic in the Abierto Mexicana first round. This Eastern-bloc clash is the first-ever meeting between the pair. Szavay has the on paper edge with a No.31 ranking and an 8-4 mark on the season, including a quarterfinal appearance in Paris a fortnight ago. Zahlavova has the disadvantage on rank – currently ranked No.86 – and a 5-5 mark, skewed by wins in the qualification rounds. She is after a quarterfinal appearance in Bogota last week. What Zahlavova does have going for her is surface edge.

Tennis Free Picks: in many ways, this match is tough to call. Szavay has the on paper edge but she is an inconsistent performer and clay is not her best surface. Therefore, her price tag of -500 is too generous in my opinion. Zahlavova has the on paper disadvantage but she has the all-important surface edge. This makes her +300 odds a tad too long in my opinion; certainly, I think she has the better shot to win this match. Because it would be an upset it is not the popular play in my opinion but it will be a good play for those looking to buck the trend. Additional recommendations: Zahlavova to cover the spread at + 5 -115 and the Over 19 ½ -110.

Tennis Betting Line:

Masa Zec Paskiric +5½ -115 +350 19 O -105 U -135
Sara Errani -5½ -125 -600 19 O -105 U -135

First Set Line: Masa Zec Paskiric +250 Sara Errani -400

Match Time: 06:00 PM Eastern Time Monday February 22, 2010

Tennis Betting Verdict: Italian Sara Errani enjoys her best results on clay but she has noteworthy performances on other surfaces from time-to-time. Errani is 7-4 this season with a semi showing in Brisbane and a R32 at the Aussie Open. Most recently, she was a quarterfinalist in Bogota. She arrives in Acapulco, seeded sixth in the draw with a shot at a second good run, in as many South American clay-court swing events. Slovenian Masa Zec Peskiric ranks outside of the top 120 and with a 4-5 mark on the season.

Tennis Free Picks: Errani has to be the better bet in this match and at -600, she is significantly favoured in the market. I would agree with the market cast, even the price tag – although pricey it is – because more likely than not she will win.

Tennis Betting Line:

Renata Voracova +2 -115 +105 21 O -110 U -130
Pauline Parmentier -2 -125 -145 21 O -110 U -130

First Set Line: Renata Voracova -105 Pauline Parmentier -135

Match Time: 09:30 PM Eastern Time Monday February 22, 2010

Tennis Betting Verdict: This match is a bit of a tossup. Both players are outside of the top 100 and both favour clay. The only mark that separates the pair is their score on the season. Parmentier is in the negative, at 4-5, while Voracova is in the positive, at 7-6. That said Voracova is the slight puppy at +105 and Parmentier gets the nod at -145.

Tennis Free Picks: Whichever way you slice this match there is value to be had. Backing Voracova at +105 has value as does taking the Over 21 -110. Parmentier to win is also a reasonable play at -145 and Parmentier to cover the spread at -2 -125.
