On the surface it looks like there is a lot of speed in this race, but really there isn’t. Most of the speed is going to come from Enriched who is likely to go off as the chalk in this. I’m putting my money on Scenic Blast because the stretching out son of Scenic figures to be the only horse that will be close enough to Enriched in order to run by that one in the stretch. Scenic Blast keeps jockey Mike Smith and returns to his preferred surface, the grass where he’s won 8 out of 22, after finishing second to Smiling Tiger in the Grade I Bing Crosby. Scenic Blast should get the perfect trip right behind favored Enriched. Enriched could have things his own way up front because neither Golden Mexico nor Scenic Blast are as fast as he is early. Golden Mexico might gun to the lead in which case jockey Joel Rosario aboard Enriched might try and track the front-runner. Either way, the son of High Brite is 3 out of 6 at the 1 mile distance and has won 5 out of 12 starts over the turf. He’s the one to beat. Bruce’s Dream finally stretched out to a route and look what happened? He beat some decent horses by a head in a state-bred stakes race. Jockey Garrett Gomez takes over for Joe Talamo and for some that might be a good thing. Bruce’s Dream is not without a shot to upset this field at what figure to be big thoroughbred horse racing betting odds.

Horseplayers have been waiting a while for Richard Mandella, who trained Pleasantly Perfect, Gentleman, and a host of other great horses, to unleash another powerful runner onto the SoCal thoroughbred wagering scene. Maybe, Champ Pegasus is that horse. The son of Fusaichi Pegasus has a 2-2-1 record out of 7 lifetime races and is coming off of a terrific second place finish to Marlang in the Grade III Sunset Handicap at Hollywood Park in July. Any further improvement will put Champ Pegasus into the winner’s circle. Red Eye Express ran horribly in his last, the Grade II San Diego, but that was over Polytrack. Although Red Eye Express has run over the turf only 3 times in his life, he’s bred to be a monster on the grass and trainer Neil Drysdale takes his time developing horses. I’m willing to give Red Eye Express another shot on Sunday. Megastar might be a cut below a couple of others in here class wise because he didn’t break his maiden until May 8 th of this year, but in his two races after that, he’s been as good as it could be expected winning a race and finishing second in the other. Megastar is a hard trying horse that will be making a run in the end no matter what the pace.
