UFC 108 Upset Special – Junior dos Santos vs. Gilbert Yvel

January 13, 2010

The best thing about heavyweight UFC bouts is that they can end at any moment via knockout. The only question in the Junior dos Santos vs. Gilbert Yvel fight on Saturday at UFC 108 is which guy will end up on the wrong end of that knockout.

Okay, okay, so a knockout isn’t certain, but whenever you get two guys in the Octagon with the striking skills that the favorite dos Santos and the underdog Yvel possess, there’s bound to be fireworks and a good chance for Knockout of the Night honors.

Dos Santos has made a name for himself in a hurry in the UFC with three huge wins over big name guys like Fabricio Werdum and Cro Cop, and now he has his sights set on another big win to boost him up towards title contention in the division down the line.

The oddsmakers at BetOnline seem to think that dos Santos can capture lightning in a bottle once again in this fight as he is listed as a -300 to +220 favorite over the underdog Yvel, but those fans who’ve seen Yvel fight in PRIDE and Affliction know it won’t be that easy.

Yvel gave Josh Barnett a tough, tough fight in which he refused to be finished by the former UFC champ, and he also threatened him with amazing striking skills and a whole lot of power.

Everytime it seemed like Barnett had a shot at a submission, Yvel wowed the crowd and worked his way out of it.

Dos Santos trains with the Nogueira brothers and is a great submission artist in his own right, but Yvel has the power to get out of his attempts to keep the fight standing.

On the feet, the UFC 108 betting underdog Yvel could at least come out even with dos Santos. Dos Santos has good power in his hands and incredible hand speed, and he will make this one of the most entertaining stand-up fights of the year in the UFC.

Yvel is a boom-or- bust kind of fighter, but he’s been around a lot longer than dos Santos and he has 31 KO’s or TKO’s to his name. He is a great upset pick in this one because of those two factors, and the pick here is that Yvel will get it done in the second round, shocking the UFC fans who’ve never seen him fight before in the process.

The pick: Gilbert Yvel (+220) by TKO in the first round.
