UFC 112 Weigh-ins – Should you bet on Gracie or Hughes
April 9, 2010
The Gracie family is one of the first families of mixed martial arts and the most popular family when it comes to Brazilian jiu-jitsu, but for the longest time, you could never mistake any of the Gracies for body builders.
The Gracies preferred to stay trim and slender as they sought to show off the effectiveness of their signature martial art more than anything else when it came to MMA competition.
But Renzo Gracie actually has a little more meat on his bones than the famous first Gracie, Royce, and he showed it off today at the UFC 112 weigh-ins.
Gracie came in a bit over the typical welterweight limit, but he’ll need all of that bulk and then some in his battle with opponent and former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes at their UFC 112 bout on Saturday in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Gracie weighed in at 171 pounds, which works out because UFC fighters are allowed to be one pound over the limit of the agreed weight.
Hughes, the wrestling master and one of the best UFC fighters of all-time at the welterweight level, came in at 170 pounds, signifying his workmanlike, no-nonsense style.
It will be a battle of jiu-jitsu vs. wrestling at UFC 112 in the UAE as Gracie tries to avenge the beating Hughes gave him in their title fight.
That was the fight that signified the end of an era, but Renzo Gracie is trying to re-establish the family name as he takes his tricky submission game into the Octagon to battle with Hughes.
Hughes, the UFC 112 betting favorite by a wide margin at -400 to +300 for the underdog Gracie going into the fight, knows a little jiu-jitsu in his own right, however.
Hughes has combined BJJ with wrestling and done it well, and some UFC fans have speculated that he might try to submit the black belt Gracie in front of the knowledgeable Abu Dhabi crowd (the famous Abu Dhabi Submission World Championships are held here) to prove a point against Gracie.
That will be tough to do but the odds are that Hughes takes him a win in this one with his superior strength and wrestling.
The stand-up games of each fighter are equally average but Hughes’ strength and wrestling gives him the edge, despite the fact that Gracie had a pound on him at the UFC 112 weigh-ins on Friday.
