UFC 118 Betting – Toney Is Just A Gimmick

August 28, 2010

With all of the talk surrounding the Lightweight Championship rematch between Frankie Edgar and BJ Penn, it’s easy to forget the co-main event heavyweight bout between MMA legend Randy ”The Natural” Couture and James “Lights Out’ Toney. After registering 72 wins in 83 career professional boxing matches, the 42-year old Toney will make his MMA debut against 47-year old Randy Couture. It is rare to see a professional transition sports at such a late age as Toney, but it’s probably just as uncommon to see one headlining Pay Per Views three years away from 50, which makes this that much more intriguing of a fight in the UFC 118 betting lines.

UFC 118 Betting: Edgar vs Penn 2

Randy Couture vs James Toney

Broadcast: Pay-Per-View

UFC 118 Betting Line: Couture -700

Leading Up To UFC 118: Randy Couture

Randy Couture made his professional MMA debut in 1997, submitting Tony Haime all t he way back at UFC 13: The Ultimate Force. Over 13 years later, Couture returns to the octagon to take on Toney in a test against one of the best in boxing. It seems as though both The Natural and Chuck Liddell continue to engage at the highest level despite concerns about both their age and ability, but after consecutive wins over Brandon Vera and Mark Coleman, it seems as though Couture isn’t ready to give up his role in the UFC just yet. Both of those fights were at the light heavyweight level, and now Couture returns to the heavyweight division where he has lost his past two fights looking for a little redemption.

Leading Up To UFC 118: James Toney

It seems as though as MMA grows in popularity around the world, more and more athletes from other sports want to take a chance and see if they can compete, with boxer James Toney the latest to make the transition. At 42-years old, “Lights Out” may never get the chance to expand his game enough to have an extended MMA career, but that hasn’t stopped the former Boxing Middleweight champion from chasing his aspirations. It is no secret that Toney will prefer a stand up style, at close-range where he can land some of his heavy punches, but when Couture takes him to ground or uses his kicks, it will be interesting to see how Toney deals with it.

UFC 118 Betting Match Up: Couture vs Toney

While it has become apparent that Couture can no longer compete at the highest level in the heavyweight division, the legend looked good in a pair of wins over Vera and Coleman, and this bout is a little different than when he took on some of the more experienced fighters in the sport. That knowledge and more well-rounded approach to the contest should make the difference, as Couture is too smart and too instinctual not to be able to overcome a boxer making his debut in the sport.

UFC 118 Betting Pick: Couture
