UFC 118 Betting Line:
Demian Maia (-210) vs. Mario Miranda (+165)
The Miranda and Maia scrap is a very interesting matchup because both guys have such similar styles. Both guys are Brazilian and both guys are black belts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, go figure. In terms of experience Maia has the edge as he’s fought some of the sports best in this weight class. But with that being said, he was also thoroughly embarrassed by the best in the division, Anderson Silva. Granted, he took that fight when he wasn’t ready, but it showed that he is a ways away from challenging for the title.
The matchup with Miranda is a much better challenge for him as he comes in with the valuable experience as well as some advantages. For one, he is a superior grappler and that will help him in the clinch game. But he’s going to need to prove he’s willing to take the fight to his Brazilian counterpart as Miranda has shown in his previous fights that he has the ability to out-strike his opponents which leads to easier takedowns.
For Maia to win this fight, he’s going to need to be the aggressor and really out work Miranda. He also needs this win to stay relevant in his division as there are plenty of guys just waiting to take his place in the pecking order.
UFC 118 Betting Line:
Nate Diaz (-220) vs. Marcus Davis (+175)
The Boston fans are in for a real treat in this matchup as these guys just match up so well with each other. Both of them are bangers, and although Davis is the bigger, more imposing man, we’ve learned that Diaz doesn’t give a flying you know what about how big you are, he’ll punch you in the mouth and let you hear about it afterwards.
Marcus Davis knows that, and he also knows that Diaz is a snake on the ground so he’ll need to win this fight standing up. That is just fine with him as he is just a natural striker, and with a name like “Irish Hand Grenade” you better be. With a heavy Irish community in Boston, you have to figure the crowd will be on his side, and if he’s able to catch Diaz and put him to sleep, you better believe there will be a party in Southy on Saturday night.
To win this fight, Davis is going to need to keep Diaz out of his head. Nate loves for you to hate him, and all that really does is get you off your game plan and allows him to impose his on you. Davis should be able to avoid the mental game and just out box Diaz, and as long as he can avoid the takedowns, Davis should win this fight.
