UFC – Rampage vs. Rashad Fight is back on
January 13, 2010
The Rashad Evans vs. Rampage Jackson fight everyone wanted to see could be back on according to UFC President Dana White and Sherdog.com. It’s a classic good guy vs. bad guy matchup, at least in terms of the role each guy plays.
White wouldn’t give a set date for a light heavyweight fight between the two Ultimate Fighter 10 coaches, but he did say that the UFC is looking at a date sometime in May for a fight between the two popular ex-coaches.
A Rampage vs. Rashad fight would be compelling for many reasons, but the biggest one might be the feud the UFC played up between them on TUF Season 10, during which Rampage was portrayed as somewhat of a bully and an uncaring coach while Evans was portrayed as the consummate leader and good guy.
Whether or not those roles actually fit the fighters has been up for debate, but Rampage has taken offense to the way he was shown on the TUF show. At the same time, however, Rampage has always played the role of the brash, in-your-face tough guy, and he got in Evans’ face a lot during the show, seemingly willing to throw down with him even before they stepped in the Octagon.
The run-ins were often mutual but Rampage seemed to be the one most willing to get after his opponent, at least according to the way the show was edited.
Of course, Jackson is currently MIA from the UFC because of his role in the new A-Team movie remake, but he is expected to be ready to go by May once his work on the movie has ended.
Even despite his inactivity, the odds are good that Rampage would be a solid favorite going into a fight with Evans. Rashad is a guy who “just wins” and doesn’t seem to have much trouble doing so, but he isn’t the kind of guy who strikes fear into his opponents like Rampage does.
Jackson has the PRIDE Fighting pedigree as one of the better fighters in that organization’s storied history, and he’s the bigger, stronger fighter who probably has more knockout power.
Should Rampage fight Evans, most betting analysts would predict that Evans would have a hard time taking down Rampage because of Rampage’s excellent wrestling skills.
Evans’ past few big-name opponents, including Forrest Griffin and Silva, both are not near the caliber of pure wrestler than Rampage is.
Rampage also would have a stand-up advantage according to most bettors, and combined with the wrestling advantage it would seem unlikely that Evans would be the favorite going into their potential fight on the BetUs.com Sportsbook.
But as we’ve seen in the past, however, upsets are commonplace in the UFC, and everyone knows that both Rampage and Rashad are more than capable of one-punch knockouts when the two finally get a chance to go at each other this May, if everything goes according to plan.
UFC fans can only hope that this “Ultimate” grudge match finally comes to fruition as its going to be fireworks once that bell rings.
