US Open Betting Tips – Americans Isner and Sock highlight first round action

September 1, 2010

New York, USA – John Isner and Jack Sock highlight first round action at the US Open today. The American duo is at opposite spectrums of the experience – Isner, 25, is a top 20 player and on the upswing, clocking important mileage on the ATP Tour, including noteworthy results.  Jack Sock, 17, is a greenhorn with absolutely no experience at this level. He’s making his ATP debut and US Open debut at the same time, courtesy of a wild card.

Isner takes on Frederico Gil of Portugal while Sock will go head-to-head against Marco Chiudinelli of Switzerland. Will Isner and Sock give the home crowd something to cheer about today? Here is a look at their respective clashes, complete with BetOnline tennis betting lines and odds.

Tennis Betting Line:

Frederico Gil  +6  -125   +400   36½  O -125   U -115
John Isner  -6  -115   -700  36½  O -125   U -115

Match Time:03:30 PM Eastern Time (12:30 Pacific Time) Wednesday September 1, 2010

Tennis Betting Verdict: John Isner is listed at a hot -700 price to win his opener against Frederico Gil. It will be their first career meeting but that shouldn’t be an issue for Isner at all. Gil is another story.

Predominantly a clay-courter, Gil’s at a disadvantage on hard courts right from the start. He’s never accomplished much on the cement.

Isner’s monstrous serve and blistering forehand spells nothing but trouble for the Portuguese player. And as if that weren’t enough, the rapturous applause of the home crowd as their son sweeps into the second round on a commanding performance will be pouring salt into his wounds.

Tennis Free Picks:  Isner -700 | Under 36 ½ -115

Tennis Betting Line:

Jack Sock  +8½  -115   +600   31½  O -105   U -135
Marco Chiudinelli  -8½  -125   -1200  31½  O -105   U -135

Match Time:03:30 PM Eastern Time (12:30 Pacific Time) Wednesday September 1, 2010

Tennis Betting Verdict: The bookies have tipped Marco Chiudinelli an outrageous -1200 favourite and Jack Sock the significant underdog at +600. Considering Chiudinelli is the top 70 player and Sock the complete unknown, the market is somewhat understandable. Considering form, it’s rather inflated.

Fortunately, for the American, Chiudinelli is a beatable player. Certainly, I don’t think the Swiss is worth -1200 smackeroos!

Why? Chiudinelli has played to a 12-23 mark this term and arrives in New York on a four-match winning streak.

Of course, he has experience that Sock doesn’t and that’ll be handy as he attempts to snap his negative trend at the expense of the home favourite. But precisely because Sock has home edge the crowds will be more vocal in their support.

One also has to consider the fact that this match is scheduled on Court 13 and not a large intimidating show court. Sock might have no experience at the ATP level but that becomes a moot point on the outside courts, a cosy setting that could be right up his alley.

I really think he just might surprise.  And I think that possibility, slim as it is, is worth a small wager.

Tennis Free Picks: Sock in five sets
