Usain Bolt Kicks Off UK Book Tour, Hopes to Sign with Man U

September 1, 2010

Jamaica’s answer to speedy Gonzales, Usain Bolt, kicked off his UK book tour in London yesterday but it’s not the book – Usain Bolt: My Story 9.58 – that is causing as much a stir as the sprint champs’ enticing Sir Alex Fergusson to sign him with Manchester United. Fancy that. Usain Bolt in a Red Devils jersey, well I never.

Sir Alex Fergusson better act fast and sign him because it’s been reported that Bolt already trained with Bayern Munich and could be stringing on a few other outfits as he flirts with a career change.

Man U is his first choice though so Fergie is in with a good chance to consummate this unexpected relationship.

In his book, he’s reported to have said, "If Alex Ferguson saw me in one of those charity matches he might think I could replace Ryan Giggs.” Source: Yahoo Sports

Now I realise Usain Bolt can get away with just about everything he wants to these days. He’s that popular and just about everybody wants to meet the fastest and most interesting man on the planet, take a picture with (or of) him and simply all around coo over him. But that’s quite apart from the question whether he should.

I mean I am not saying it isn’t possible for him to switch careers (it’s exactly what I am saying) and that he couldn’t be a legitimate alternative to Man U’s left-winger Ryan Giggs (precisely that), but to go from sprinting to football is quite the huge leap.

Speaking of leaps, had he said he’d add long jumping or high jumping to his bag of tricks that’d be a natural extension of his CV.

Then again, what do I know. It seems Louis van Gaal (the former Bayern Munich manager), praised his skills on the pitch when interviewed by a French magazine L’Equipe; so, if van Gaal says he’s great maybe he is. Now, Fergie has to snap him up while he still is in the open market.
